US pipeline wins

Native American tribes, including the Standing Rock Sioux, have won a federal court decision to have the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) closed and drained for a year while engineers assess its environmental impact.

The US supreme court has also upheld a lower court ruling to block a key environmental permit for a second oil pipeline, Keystone XL, which has also been the subject of major protests.

US president Donald Trump had attempted to fast-track both projects.

Meanwhile, the gas companies behind the 600-mile Atlantic Coast Pipeline (from West Virginia to North Carolina) have cancelled the project, citing costs of litigation and protest.

LaDonna Brave Bull Allard, who hosted the first DAPL resistance camp on her property, told the US TV/radio show Democracy Now!: ‘I’m still overwhelmed.… There must be justice in this world, and there must be accountability.… We need, as Native people, not to be invisible in our own homelands.’
