Campaign Profile: Global Climate Campaign

The Global Climate Campaign is the collective name given to all the organisations, groups and individuals around the world who come together for the Global Day of Action on climate, this year set for 4 December.

The day of action has occurred every year since 2005 at the time of the annual United Nations Talks on climate change (the COP or “Conference of Parties” to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). The “World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth”, held in Bolivia on 19-22 April 2010, endorsed this year's Global Day of Action, which calls for “the long-industrialised countries that have emitted most greenhouse gases currently in the atmosphere take responsibility for climate change mitigation by immediately reducing their own emissions as well as investing in a clean energy revolution in the developing world.”

The last Global Day of Action on 12 December 2009 included a magnificent demonstration of 100,000 people from all around the world in Copenhagen, at the actual location of the UN Climate Talks; another 100,000 demonstrating all around Australia (with 40,000 in Melbourne alone); and 22 demonstrations around India. People in 109 countries have signed up to the Global Climate Campaign.
