UHC Collective Activist Toolbox
UHC Collective: An impressive collection of links and online resources, covering many aspects of activism, from sorting out your internal democratic structures, to going on the offensive with creative and confrontational nonviolent direct action.

Billboard Liberation Front- The Art & Science of Billboard Improvement
Billboard Liberation Front: The Billboard Liberation Front have been at the forefront of the assault on advertsiing for many years, subverting many of the most famous icons of the advertsing industry. Their guidebook provides a fairly comprehensive indroduction to improving, changing, defacing and destroying outdoor advertising.
Other sites worth visiting for practical ideas or inspiration include:
Reklamsabotage (Swedish adbusters, with an anti-militarist, feminist slant)
Adbusters (Canadian culture jammers)
Subvertise (UK based archive with hundreds of subvertised images)

Centre For Alternative Technology
CAT Publications: Since 1975, the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) has been a pioneering research and demonstration centre which aims to inspire, inform and enable people to explore new ways of living. It has established a worldwide reputation as one of the leading organisations demonstrating ecological technologies and lifestyles. They have produced a range of practical guides covering many different aspects of sustainable living such as yurt building, ecological sewage treatment, and small scale electricty generation. Many of the resources can be downloaded from the site, for a small fee.

Menwith Hill- a disarmament guide
Menwith Hill: A very comprehensive guide to the fences and other security features at Menwith Hill spy base in the north of England.
The website contains lots of valuable practical information for people who want to visit (and disarm) any radar, satellite or signals intelligence base.
There is a similar website covering the early warning radar site at Fylingdales.

Road Raging- Top Tips for Wrecking Road Building
Road Raging: This practical handbook gives advice on building and maintaining a nonviolent direct action (NVDA) campaign, based on the experiences of the British anti-roads movement between 1992 and 1996. It contains information on topics such as building a campaign, dealing with the media, and doing research into companies, as well as practical advice on actions including blockading, occupations and Reclaim The Streets parties. Although the guide deals mainly with opposition to road building, and is focussed on the situation in the UK, much of the information is also relevant to people and groups campaigning on other issues and in other places.

Voices in the Wilderness - Iraq Peace Team
Voices in the Wilderness: "Since its founding in 1996, Voices in the Wilderness has campaigned to end economic and military warfare against the Iraqi people. We have done this mostly by organizing delegations to Iraq in deliberate violation of U.N. economic sanctions and U.S. law, to publicly deliver small amounts of medical supplies to children and families in need. Our primary focus has always been ordinary Iraqi civilians and the most vulnerable of Iraqi society, especially children."

This is a clearing house for non-violent responses to the War on Iraq, and contains news, analysis, details of non-violent action, and much more. The site also contains reports of the delegations who were in Iraq from before the war right up to the present day. An indispensible site for anyone wishing to understand the Iraq Conflict from a non-violent perspective.

Citizen Weapons Inspectors Teams
www.cwit.org: "Citizen Weapons Inspection Teams have been conducting inspections of suspected weapons sites where nuclear bombs and weapons systems are deployed, stored, built or designed. Nuclear bases, corporate headquarters and research labs have all come under citizen scrutiny... You can join with other community leaders and organize an inspection of a suspected site, and then share your findings with the media and the world community."

This focused site provides resources for anyone wishing to conduct a "citizens'inspection" of a nuclear facility, and takes you through every stage, from planning to issuing the final press release and report. It contains sample reports, and video footage of previous inspections

Media Lens
Media Lens: This UK-based co-operative is focused on "correcting for the distorted vision of the corporate media. MediaLens has grown out of our frustration with the unwillingness, or inability, of the mainstream media to tell the truth about the real causes and extent of many of the problems facing us, such as human rights abuses, poverty, pollution and climate change." This is site which not only reports Media Distortions (on a whole raft of issues from Animal Rights, through Corporate Corrutpion, to Terrorism) but actively confronts manistream media and attempts to dialogue with them. A well-organised archive, which also has a mailing list facility.

Centre for Research on Globalisation
Centre for Research on Globalisation: "The Centre for Research on Globalisation (CRG) is an independent research and media group of progressive writers, scholars and activists committed to curbing the tide of "globalisation" and "disarming" the New World Order. The CRG webpage at http://globalresearch.ca based in Montréal publishes news articles, commentary, background research and analysis on a broad range of issues, focussing on the interrelationship between social, economic, strategic, geopolitical and environmental processes." There are extensive archives organised by world region and subject matter. This is a bilingual French/English site.

Oxford Research Group
Oxford Research Group: "O.R.G combines rigorous research into nuclear and international security decisions with an understanding of the people who make those decisions. Since O.R.G.’s foundation in 1982, we have contacted key decision-makers worldwide and developed a personal dialogue with them on global security issues. We bring together government officials, senior military officers and diplomats with nuclear physicists, independent defence analysts and non-government organisation (NGO) representatives to debate steps towards building a more secure world through the elimination of nuclear weapons, reduction and control of the arms trade and effective non-violent resolution of conflict." This UK-based Quaker inspired group's site contains online copies of detailed research reports on a wide range of topics related to peace and disarmament, many of them authored by world authorities in their fields. Recent topics include NMD, The War on Iraq, Civil plutonium incidents, and the Fissile Materials Treaty.

Protest Net
Protest Net: Protest.Net is a site to help progressive activists by providing a central place where the times and locations of protests and meetings can be posted. It lists events from all over the world by location, and also by topic category. You can also notify the site of your own actions, and you can use the resources of the site to create your own calendar of events. A hugely impressive site, which, in the words of the New York Times is a portal which "unites activists under one URL".

PeaceUK.net
PeaceUK.net: This UK-based site is the web-resource manager's personal site, offering a daily mailing service of english-language anti-war items from the world's press. The key features are a searchable archive of previous mailings, and the ability for users to submit comments and submit their own items for editorial consideration. The site focuses on September 11th 2001 and its consequences.

ELectronic Intifada
Electronic Intifada: This is the indispensable site for news, comment, and activist reports on the Palestinian situation. It is unreservedly pro-Palestine, and unequivocally condemns the policies of the Israeli Government. It carries much news on anti-government activisim by jews within Israel and in the diaspora. The following description, offered on the site, is accurate. "The Electronic Intifada project (EI) is an online publication produced by a small network of pro-Palestinian activists with a history of Internet and media activism. EI undertakes research into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, publishes a variety of general educational material and media analysis, offers information services to journalists and editors, occasionally encourages letters of concern, offers unique media content, and even publishes satire." Updated several times daily, it is without equal in the sphere of anti-imperialist reporting of the Palestinian sitution.

Video Activists' Network
VIdeo Activists' Network (VAN): "The VAN is an informal association of activists and politically conscious artists using video to support social, economic and environmental justice campaigns.". The site contains useful information and advice for video activists, including such items as "A report on police action against protesters and tips on video witnessing". There is a large catalogue of activist videos available for sale, or accesible free through streaming video. There are also linke to a large numer of video activist sites from all over the world. Many of the items are focussed towards peace and anti-corporate issues. The site is USA-based and in English only although some links lead to non-English-language sites.

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
SIPRI: How many armed conflicts were there in the world in 2001? Was this more or less than the previous year? What proportion of its GDP did the UK spend on armaments during the 1990s? How many countries stockpile chemical weapons? For the authoritative answer to these, and thousands of other questions, SIPRI has no rival. The site draws much of its data from the SIPRI Yearbook, but contains a wide range of other reports and analyses. Founded in 1966, it "seeks to contribute to the understanding of the preconditions for a stable peace and for peaceful solutions of international conflicts' by undertaking research concentrated on armaments, their limitation and reduction, and arms control. It specialises in amassing very detailed factual information, often presented in tables, about all aspects of war, armaments, and disarmament. Despite its international focus, this is an exclusively English language site.

Peace Magazine
Peace Magazine Web Site: "Four times a year we publish articles, news stories, book and film reviews, letters, and a calendar of events. We discuss disarmament; conflict resolution; nonviolent sanctions; peace institutions (e.g. the United Nations and the World Court); conflicts and crises around the world; profiles of activists and researchers; and controversies about development, population, and environmental protection." Peace Magazine is published by Canadian Disarmament Information Service (CANDIS) -- a nonprofit organization. A good selection of all articles appear on the site, which has a search engine. There is also an interesting links page, listing about 70 related sites.

MoveOn Peace
MoveOn Peace: (formerly 9-11peace.org) "OUR CALL IS THIS: President Bush and citizens around the globe, let us not enter into World War III. Rather, let us begin immediately to forge WORLD PEACE I.". This site was founded by a group of US peace activists immediately after the attacks of September 11th 2001. It provides weekly analysis which stands back from the day-to-day news, and takes a different theme each week, but usually related to issues raised by the "war on terrorism". Each analysis contains several links and references to key resources. It is possible to subscribe to the site and receive the mailings. Materials are available in both English and Spanish. This site is a project of www.moveon.org.

CharityJOB - for fundraising jobs and charity jobs of all kinds
CharityJOB: This site lists charity jobs, mainly but not exclusively in the UK, and provides a weekly mailing service free of charge. There is a significant section on international development. In just one typical week, there were jobs advertised in East Timor, Afghanistan, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Tanzania, Congo, Angola, Cambodia, and Albania. Weekly mailings typically include over 100 jobs.

New Internationalist Magazine
New Internationalist: "exists to report on the issues of world poverty and inequality; to focus attention on the unjust relationship between the powerful and the powerless in both rich and poor nations; to debate and campaign for radical changes necessary within and between these nations if the basic material and spiritual needs of all are to be met; and to bring to life the people, the ideas, the action in the fight for global justice". The New Internationalist has been at the forefront of the campaign for global justice for more than a quarter century. This megalithic site carries on-line versions of all monthly back-issues from 1983 onwards, with several efficient search facilities. If there is a better comprehensive web resource for informed critical analysis of the world situation, then I have not found it. Five stars!

Common Dreams
Common Dreams: “Common Dreams is a national non-profit citizens' organization working to bring progressive Americans together to promote progressive visions for America's future. Founded in 1997, we are committed to being on the cutting-edge of using the internet as a political organizing tool - and creating new models for internet activism.”. This well-organised and regularly updated English language site, offers news, comment, a very comprehensive list of US-based progressive organisations, and a list of many of the best known international progressive commentators, each with a link direct to their web site or the source of their collected writings on the web. Although US-based it deals with international issues, and is a carefully moderated site. Anyone can also sign up to their daily email news digest service.

Media Workers Against War
Media Workers Against War: “Media Workers Against War is run by a small number of volunteers working in all types of media. Although volunteers at MWAW have different political ideologies we are an independent organisation that is not linked to any political institution. Media Workers Against War are opposed to the so called ‘war on terrorism’ and the mainstream media’s support for aggressive action against innocent civilians under the pretence of ‘anti-terrorism’. “
This UK-based site is the web-resource manager’s personal favourite. It gathers anti-war news from diverse sources, and provides daily updates under headings which include “global reports”, “media monitor”, and “action”. There is a strong editorial selection, which ensures high quality and relevance of all items (unlike the overkill of sites like antiwar.com). There is a search engine, and a good links page.

UK Indymedia
UKIndymedia.org: “Indymedia UK is a network of individuals, independent and alternative media activists and organisations, offering grassroots, non-corporate, non-commercial coverage of important social and political issues. “ It links to over 100 sister sites throughout the world, publishing local activist news and comment mainly in the native language of the location. Each site links to all others. Anyone with access to the web can publish on this site (text, pictures, and even video). There appears to be no moderation of content. Rather, the organisation is committed to the concept of “open publishing” where individuals decide what to publish. Free debate is encouraged through a facility that allows anyone to publish a reply to any posting. Contributions are posted on a “wire” in reverse date order (most recent at the top), and the site may be searched. The site’s greatest strength is its ability to get independent information out during demonstrations, crises, and other fast-moving situations. Its weakness is overload of items of dubious relevance, and there is no guarantee that all items promote non-violence. Despite this, particularly as an important counterweight to the “managed” mainstream media, this site is to be recommended.

Transnational Foundation for Peace and Futures Research
Transnational Foundation: “Welcome to the home of TFF - frequently updated analyses, ideas, columns, debates, news, bookstore, TFF News Navigator , links and more. TFF's mission is peace: learning to handle conflicts with ever less violence against other human beings, other cultures and Nature.
We are a networking organization with associates all over the globe. We believe that alternatives to the main trends of our time are desirable and possible - indeed necessary for humankind to survive and live with dignity. TFF is critical and constructive. “ This is Sweden’s most well-known peace-related web-site, offering materials in English and also various Nordic languages. The unique feature of this site is its worldwide network of “Associates”, who provide regular, thoughtful, and in-depth commentary on global affairs. These include Scilla Elworthy, Richard Falk, and around 50 other significant contributors to the peace movement.

Antiwar.com
www.antiwar.com: A Division of the Center for Libertarian Studies (USA). This amazing site scans the English language newspapers and media sources of the world, and updates its news and comment archive on an hourly basis. Its strength is the comprehensiveness of its daily coverage of any aspect of the international situation which has a bearing on war and peace. It files up to 100 new items per day, and always has the last week’s items in a special folder. It helpfully separates news from comment and analysis. Currently (July 2002) its coverage is dominated by the “War on Terror” and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, but it has no limitations on topic – it simply reflects the preoccupation of the media it scans. The main weakness of the site is the lack of a sophisticated search engine to scan earlier items for a particular topic. A second weakness is the complete absence of any coverage of items in languages other than English. But to find out what the world’s media are saying about war and peace today, this site has no equal.

War Resisters' League
War Resisters' Leage Web Site:
This is the website of the US section of War Resisters International (a UK-based organisation with sections in over 30 countries, also with close reiprocal relations to “Peace News”). It is packed with resources, including a monthly on-line magazine “The Nonviolent Activist”, a sign-up email list, and a variety of specialist reports, statements and resource packs. One pack which came to the attention of Peace News is “Reviving Resistance: WRL Disarmament Packet: July 2002”, but there are many others. “War Resisters League believes war is a crime against humanity. We use peaceful means to create a society that is democratic, free of economic, racial, and sexual oppression. The methods we use range from education to demonstrations to lobbying to nonviolent direct action-at all times trying to see those we oppose not as enemies, but as sisters and brothers.” Despite the fact that this site is English language only and designed primarily for activists in the USA, its materials are of such high quality and relevance that it will be useful in many contexts outside the USA.

Corporate Watch
CorporateWatch: CorporateWatch is the most comprehensive resource for critical observers of major companies and multinationals, including those that feed off war in all its forms (e.g. oil companies, arms and aircraft manufacturers etc.). It is an independent UK-based research group, which regularly updates detailed profiles on all the major corporations, and provides exhaustive information on anti-corporate activism worldwide. It includes a monthly newsletter which you can suscribe to via email. Although it doesn’t explicitly say so, it appears that non-violent direct action is the only kind of action it supports or advocates, and its work is supported by a number of charities. The site is in English language only.

International Peace Bureau
International Peace Bureau: Founded in 1892 the IPB is “an international non-governmental peace organisation. It exists to serve the cause of peace by the promotion of General and Complete Disarmament; the non-violent solution of conflicts; and international cooperation. Members of the IPB commit themselves to working together as a network; to sharing ideas, information and resources; and to the creation of joint projects”. The site contains a variety of resources and links, a monthly newsletter, and a very comprehensive list of full-text statements from progressive organisations and individuals reacting to key recent world developments. voluntary and development work, as well as career opportunities in non-profit organisations. The site has an excellent search engine, which allows you to search by country, type of organisation, and other criteria. Each organisation has a description and full contact details. In addition to searching and browsing, you can use the site to define what information you'd like to receive by email from among the job openings, volunteer opportunities, internships, events, and resources posted here by organisations all over the world, and receive all of this in no more than one personalised email per day. The site is published in both Castilian Spanish and English.

There is a monthly e-newsletter called "Sunflower" which you can request to be directly emailed to you, or you can consult back issues archived on the site. The site incorporates an on-line discussion forum, and an online shop selling books, t-shirts, stickers etc. Site is in English language only and run from the USA.

Ohio State University website: If you’re looking for anti-war literature, this is the place to go. Also available on the site is a MASSIVE bibliography of resources on everything you can imagine – women, political prisoners, human rights, anarchism, etc.

Do It Yourself! – GroenFront! Action Resources
GroenFront! (Dutch EarthFirst! website): This is a wonderful, must-read guide for every activist, offering everything from legal advice (what to do if you’re arrested in Holland) to instructions on how to build a blockade to police scanner frequencies. The site also provides some useful outside links, including one to a map on the Greenpeace website of genetically engineered plant fields in The Netherlands.
