Worldwide: The Sunflower Project is a global citizen effort to plant sunflower seeds all over the world as living symbols of hope toward harmony between people and nations, as well as people and nature.
"People from every nation will be making a collective, conscious, powerful, yet silent statement by planting sunflowers where they will be noticed," said one of the Sunflower Project's coordinators - "Individuals and groups are telling us they will be planting their seeds in vacant lots, in fields, along roadways, city streets, at schools, around waste sites, places of worship, threatened open space, along stretches of railroad, parking lots, playgrounds, as well as in their gardens."
The sunflower was chosen for the project for several reasons. Sunflowers stand out, reaching heights of six to 12 feet. They turn their heads to follow the sun, and provide food, oil, and fiber as well as a golden yellow dye. In 1996 sunflowers were chosen by the defense ministers of the US, Russia, and Ukraine to be planted where missiles had once been buried. US secretary of defence William Perry stated, "Sunflowers instead of missiles in the soil would ensure peace for future generations."
