London: Established in the inter-war years to serve "all who are working for peace", Peace News began publishing as a weekly tabloid in 1936.
This June will mark 70 years of continuing that tradition and, to celebrate, PN is organising an all-day event which, we hope, will appeal to a wide range of readers and supporters, and the broader community of curious anti-war/peace people.
Full details can be accessed here. Otherwise, here's a rough outline:
DAYTIME: The daytime event (11am–5pm) will include workshops and plenary discussions where participants can engage with issues currently covered in Peace News.
>>>THEORY>>> Old wars - new battles : The war on terror, deterrence Vs first-use, blind patriotism Vs military discontent
>>>PRACTICE>>> Strategic campaigning: cultural decopntamination, tactical pressure and the tipping point
There will also be the opportunity for people to feed into the editorial direction of the paper, participate in a fun, all-ages, banner-making workshop and have a play/hone their skills in the NVDA training games session.
NIGHTTIME: In the evening there will be a Peace News 70th Birthday party (7pm – midnight) featuring live bands, film showings and DJ’s.
Food and drink will be available in exchange for a donation.
VENUE:The event will be held at The Square Occupied Social Centre (www.londonsocialcentre.org.uk), 21 Russell Square, Central London (nearest tube Russell Square; Buses: 7, 59, 68, 91, 168, 188, X68, N7, N91)
All welcome. Entry by donation.
ACCESS: this is a free space and we regret that there are eight steps up to the building and no wheelchair-accessible toilet.
