Statement on Colombia (in English and Spanish)

Colombia: Pax Christi, the International Catholic Peace movement, is very concerned by the break down of the peace dialogue in Colombia and the re-militarisation of the Caguan region. The civilian population in this region is once again in danger of being victimised by violence from several groups involved in the conflict.

Pax Christi International appeals to the Government of Colombia to secure the human rights of the people in the region according to international humanitarian law. It also asks all the groups involved to end the violence immediately and begin an unconditional dialogue for peace.

The international peace movement appeals to the international community, especially the United Nations, the Organisation of American States and the European Union to intensify attention to violations of human rights in Colombia in general and to send observers to the Caguan zone in order to ensure the safety of the people as soon as possible.

Pax Christi Internacional, quiere expresar su profunda preocupación por la ruptura del diàlogo de paz en Colombia y por la remilitarizacion de la región del Caguàn. La población civil de la región esta nuevamente en peligro de ser victima de la violencia de los diferentes grupos involucrados en el conflicto.

Pax Christi Internacional pide al gobierno de Colombia garantizar el respeto a los derechos humanos de la población de la región de acuerdo con el derecho internacional humanitario. Tambien pide a todos los grupos involucrados poner fin de inmediato a la violencia y comenzar incondicionalmente el dialogo por la paz.

Pax Christi Internacional, se dirige a la comunidad internacional, especialmente a las Naciones Unidas, a la Organización de Estados Americanos y a la Union Europea para que intensifiquen su atención y cuidado de los derechos humanos en Colombia en general y pide enviar observadores a la zona del Caguan, lo mas pronto posible, para garantizar la seguridad de la población.
