Worldwide: On the last day of the G8 summit in Scotland, one enterprising group focused on the issue of climate change and organized a global day of action against its root causes.
The day of action called for climate justice in Scotland and all around the world. Some were planned in secret and burst into light on the day. Characterized as big, joyous and angry, it confronted the leaders who are marching us merrily towards the cliff-edge. Under the banner of ‘Ceildh On the Clyde' or 'Boogie on the Bridge,’ it began at 2pm on July 8 in Glasgow.
Describing the G8 talk of climate change as hot air, one of the principal targets was the M74 extension, which will cut through the heart of Glasgow and increase carbon-spewing traffic. One can think of so many targets, such as the oil and gas industry, airports and the aviation industry, fossil-fuelled power stations, carmakers, carbon trading companies, the nuclear industry……The list could go on and on.
Contrary to media reports that the action would be threatening to them, the action was peaceful and made in solidarity with the people who have to work in these sectors, as they allegedly suffer from dangerous workplaces, low pay and terrible conditions.
Actions also took place in Venezuela, New Zealand, Iceland, Australia, the Philippines and Reading. A global movement for climate justice is coming together. It is saying 'no' to G8, World Bank, IMF, UN and corporate market-based 'solutions' to the climate crisis, and 'yes' to a post-oil, post-poverty, post-capitalist future.
