Worldwide solidarity!

by: kate j-PN

North America: A day after the US presidential election US, citizen James Zetlen, a 20-year-old neuroscience student at the University of California, posted a picture of himself online holding a sign which read, "Sorry world (we tried)- half of America". Within a few days, http://www.sorryeverybody.com had 27 million hits and now hosts a gallery of more than 2,200 pictures of expressive and disgruntled Americans. In the last week, thousands of people from Britain, Germany, France, Norway, Brazil and beyond, have accepted the apology and expressed solidarity and blessings. James had this to say, "Lots of fuss is made about the 'global village'. The Internet was supposed to make communication between cultures, countries and peoples painless and easy. It was supposed to build bridges. But it doesn't do this automatically; somebody has to reach out. The Internet was supposed to lead to education and understanding. It doesn't. Rarely do people on the internet apologise. I thought it was high time. The world needs to understand that there are people in America who don't like what our government is doing. And from the mail we're receiving, there are people in the international community who appreciate this...(however) anything like this is ripe material for parody," he said. "I can't blame anybody."
Republican-supporting websites have been created in response, such as http://www.notsorryeverybody.com, and http://www.sorryeverybodymyass.com. In the meantime, a handful of supportive websites including http://www.apologiesaccepted.com, and http://www.notsorrynoteverybody.com have sprung up in its defence. It may turn into a circus, but it's nice to see people are talking.
