 | Sit-down in Whitehall. PHOTO: snapper/IMC , | London: Whitehall was brought to a standstill today, as people laid flowers for the people of Fallujah at the war memorial (cenotaph).
Lead by a solemn procession bearing a coffin to symbolise the dead of Iraq, and those who will die if the US attack on Fallujah intensifies, a wreath of pink and white flowers was placed on the cenotaph, followed by bunches of white flowers. As the police attempted to prevent more people laying their flowers, around 30 people sat down in the road, blocking Whitehall traffic for some 10-15 minutes.
Around 250 people had gathered at Parliament Square to protest against US action in Iraq, and in particular, to oppose the planned US assault on Fallujah, which has already been subjected to bombing raids - including the destruction of a hospital - and is now encircled by US troops.
Flowers for Fallujah was organised by Stop the Attacks!, an ad hoc group of activists (email stoptheattacks (at) fastmail.fm)
