Faslane, Scotland: On 23 June three anti-Trident protestors exposed serious flaws in security at the Faslane naval base in Scotland when they broke into the high security nuclear weapons site.
Falsane is located 30 miles from Glasgow and is home to Britain's four
Trident nuclear submarines. The submarines carry nuclear-armed missiles,
each with warheads that can produce seven times the explosive power of the
atomic bomb dropped at Hiroshima.
The three Trident Ploughshares activists, Roz Bullen from Edinburgh, Morag
Forbes and Sue Brackenbury(both from Faslane Peace Camp), entered the base at the north end, cutting a hole in the perimeter fence large enough to admit Roz, who uses a wheelchair. The activists made their way to the inner fence and were
in the process of cutting their way through that when they were detained.
They painted peace slogans such as “No WMD” on buildings inside the base.
Roz has been charged with causing £200 worth of damage to the outer fence
and £600 damage to the inner one. Sue and Morag were both charged with causing £200 worth of damage to the outer fence and £600 damage to the buildings.
The three women activists (two of whom have disabilities disabled), were
released from custody the following morning delighted with the progress they made in exposing poor security at the base and in highlighting the British government's hypocrisy over weapons of mass destruction.
