London: The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) works to promote women's empowerment, rights and gender equality worldwide. The agency tries to help alleviate the situation of women in the developing world living below the poverty line, by providing the means for them to help themselves. UNIFEM UK supports this work through awareness raising, lobbying and fundraising.
The new site aims to raise awareness of the valuable work of UNIFEM, to keep supporters of the UN agency in touch and to help raise funds to support its activities. It provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programmes and strategies that promote women's economic security, human rights and political participation.
Visitors to the site will find a summary of the mission of UNIFEM and an outline of some of the activities being carried out by this, the youngest of the UN's relief agencies. Information about planned activities across the UK can be found on the new site together with contact details for the four UNIFEM UK Branches. The site additionally provides a link to the UK Secretary, for donations, general inquiries or for membership.
Speaking at the launch were the UNIFEM UK President Juliet Colman and the Secretary of State for International Development, the Rt. Hon Hilary Benn MP who both praised the work that UNIFEM does in the field of gender inequality.
