Iceland: Iceland has just announced that it will kill another 25 minke whales during the next month or so as part of its “scientific whaling” programme. The whales will be killed in nine areas around the country, in line with last year’s whale-killing program when a total of 36 whales were killed.
Although the announcement has only just been made, it had been expected for a few weeks. However, significantly, the authorities are obviously concerned at potential repercussions as originally up to 100 minke whales were going to be caught this year, as well as an unspecified number of fin and sei whales. The authorities still aim to take 200 minke whales in total, but over a longer time period. They have postponed the killing of fin and sei whales as they say the need to research these whales is less urgent, plus the killing of these is more controversial.
