Russian Federation: Amnesty International demands the acquittal and release of journalist-activist Grigory Pasko who has been sentenced to four years in prison on treason charges in the Russian Far East.
In 1993, Pasko filmed a Russian navy tanker dumping radioactive waste and ammunition in the Sea of Japan. After having passed on public information on the issue to Japanese media, he was arrested on spying charges. Following international and Russian human rights organisations protests, Pasko was finally released in 1999. But after an appeal, a military court in the city of Vladivostok gave Pasko a four years sentence for treason and espionage in December 2001.
Amnesty International, which has adopted Pasko as a prisoner of conscience, is calling to its members to take action on the International Human Rights Day on 10 December for Pasko's immediate and unconditional release.
