Hunger strike over
Natasha Stone
On 21 June, Turkish conscientious objector Mehmet Tarhan ended his hunger strike: after 28 days, the prison authorities agreed to his conditions of equal treatment.
The gay CO began the drastic action partly in response to the authorities' neglect at reporting a series of physical assaults he had been subjected to during three months spent in Sivas military prison.
He has now been charged with "Insubordination in front of the unit" (Article 88 TACK, the Turkish Military Penal Code), and was due in court as PN went to press.
