25 years for peace
Pavla Gossop
Twenty-five years ago, on the green slope overlooking Willen Lake in Milton Keynes, the foundation stone was laid of the first Peace Pagoda in the Western Hemisphere.
It was laid by the Most Venerable Nichidatsu Fujii (Guruji), founder of the Buddhist order Nipponzan Myohoji, an order dedicated to world peace, particularly the elimination of weapons of mass destruction.
Sunday 19 June saw the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Peace Pagoda. Eighteen monks and nuns from Nipponzan Myohoji Peace Pagodas all round the world had gathered to support the small community at Willen. Representatives of a number of faiths offered prayers of peace and music from different traditions - Sikh, Christian, Ba'hai, Saibaba and Hindu. Around 300 guests and members of the public also joined the event.
