Smash EDO:partial victory on injunctions
Kat Barton
Campaigners scored a partial victory in the courts at the end of April when an attempt by EDO/MBM Technologies - Brighton's resident arms manufacturer - to create an exclusion zone around its factory, was temporarily thwarted (see PN2461 cover story).
The judge presiding over the case granted a modified temporary injunction in the run-up to the official case, stating: "freedom of expression is a right jealously guarded in English law".
Ceri Gibbons, one of the defendants, said "EDO have made a great mistake in bringing this action to court. Now their contempt for human rights has been exposed to public view."
Opportunity for action
Whilst the battle is clearly not over yet, it does give the campaign the opportunity to make itself heard
before
it defends its right to protest, in the High Court this summer.
The campaign is now reaching out to individuals and groups around the country to ask for help in fighting EDO/MBM and in defending the legal right to protest - an issue which, of course, affects us all.
There will be a national demonstration outside the factory on Saturday 11 June with mini-buses travelling from all around the country (see enclosed flyer). The campaign is asking people to spread the word about the demo and, importantly, about the forthcoming court case.
