Block the Builders finally take action
Janet Kilburn
On 9 May, as the first BtB protester was being released from prison - after receiving a 14-day sentence for wanton vandalism in protest at new developments at AWE Aldermaston - Block the Builders (BtB) finally swung into action, with an early morning blockade of construction traffic at the base.
According to a BtB spokesperson, the police were caught on the hop as they were still in their briefing when activists arrived and began their blockade.
Around 30 activists closed two gates with D-locks, arm-tubes, and their simple presence. One gate was held for around one and half hours before a police cutting team were able to remove those locked on. There were seven arrests, although only two people were charged. BtB state that more blockades and disruption are on its way.
Block the Builders is the "direct action wing" of a broader campaign to oppose a range of new facilities currently under construction at Britain's nuclear weapons factory. A spokesperson for BtB said "We believe that these new developments will equip the UK to test, design and build new weapons which will violate the UK's commitments under Article VI of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)".
