Yorkshire and Humberside CND worker John Brierley was gob-smacked when he heard that the highlight of the 1995 Elvington International Air Spectacular was to be a re-enactment of the bombing of Hiroshima.Organisers were promising "the biggest controlled explosion ever seen at a public airshow" until mild-mannered John Brierley caught wind of it. Slipping into his tights with his underpants on the outside, he reached for his Superfax. In no time SuperJohn had whipped up a whirlwind of press concern and by the end of the day the Air Spectacular had scrapped the plan. Next month in tales of Superjohn: mild-mannered Mr Brierley goes to Mururoa.
