Mandate for total objection

<*> The Spanish section of Amnesty International is asking Amnesty's international council to recognise total objectors to military service as prisoners of conscience. There are more than 200 total objectors--insumisos--in prison in the state of Spain.

The War Resisters' International triennial in Brazil and the International Conscientious Objectors' Meeting in Colombia in late 1994 both passed resolutions calling on Amnesty to consider insumisos as falling within their mandate as prisoners of conscience (Peace News February 1995).

Amnesty's international council will meet from 10-20 August in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The support of all Amnesty sections is necessary for the insumisos to be given this status; please write to your national group asking it to support the Spanish resolution.
